My Showreel

I’ve honed my editing skills through creating content for YouTube for years both professionally and independently. For over a year I’ve been editing for Kelsey Rodriguez, one of the top Arts Education YouTube channels with over 230,000 subscribers, and the videos I have edited have accumulated more than 1.3 million views (both on Kelsey’s channel and my own channel).

Below is a showreel displaying a variation of content I have made over the years that represents my editing best.

Where Most Channels Go WRONG

Most YouTube channels undervalue script writing and ideation. Yes, having fancy graphics, animations, lots of movement and rhythm in the editing can help, but it’s all pointless if it’s simply covering up bad content.

Another major issue is the lack of understanding when it comes to “a target audience”.

Do you have a clear picture in mind of who your viewers are? Their desires? Their fears? Their income? Their age?

If you don’t know who you’re targeting, likelihood is the YouTube algorithm also doesn’t know (especially if you keep putting out different types of videos!).

The Solution?

Spend time refining ideas and scripts within the context of a very specific audience in mind. YouTube has recently started giving smaller channels a chance, and the algorithm has been blowing channels up that simply make “good videos”.

Here are some examples I’ve collected myself:

The videos above are “outliers”; videos that have performed exceptionally well on a channel relative to what their norm is. From a thumbnail perspective I would even say that the two videos on the left could’ve made some changes to increase their CTR, but what this really shows is … yeah I’m gonna say it …

Content is king.

Thumbnails Go Hand in Hand with Titles

Sometimes a visually appealing thumbnail is held back by the chosen text (if any) of the design but what a lot of creators don’t realise is how the text on the thumbnail must compliment the title; ideally creating an irresistible curiosity that gets the click.

Below are some of the thumbnails I’ve worked on myself, and for ease I’ve separated them into different categories (although styles do cross over different niches).
